lyon day 1

i hate french.. just to start off

left this morning at 9 to lyon.. i stayed awake as long as possible looking eagerly out the windows to see something cool but its mainly plains, farms, and forests. cooler than the US in that when there is a house or barn or church its super old and stone/bricky and cool looking.. not a decrepit shack with a falling roof like i see on the way through Illinois. passed a lot of monument/city signs that i am meaning to look up including: Milly la fôret, St martherin, nemours, egreville, sens auxerre, château de tanley, roche de solutre.. if i copied them down right.

i say i hate french because the whole way there i was in the back seat listening to french music.. could barely understand, and if i could it was because it was annoyingly repetitive haha. and you know when youre in the backseat of a car, on the highway, with music.. you have to struggle to follow the front conversation? well it was worse cus french people talk quiet, and the music and im behind them.. and road noise.. so i was just lost the whole time feeling like all i could hear was white noise ;awlekfv,cvmaoei;lfjkdvm,c. cus thats pretty much what it was. grr



moving on
lyon is very cute, lots of medieval streets and shops and churches. visited a beauutiiful church on a huuggee hill 'basilique notre-dame de fourvière'. i loved it. it was incredibly detailed and just beautiful.. why cant they still make churches like that when they have more money and better equipment? this church was from the 18th century.. so i dont understand why now they look like a classroom.. :( ill get on changing it myself i guess haha

we spent most of the time just walking through old streets. we got 'des bugnes' which is lyons famous pastry.. tasted just like a funnel cake but less greasy and more crunchy. they are also famous for eating every part of a pig, i said nay on those restaurants.  they have a ton of little 'squares' with a statue in the middle that are just open with the streets around them. all brick streets. its verry pretty. they also have an amazing metro system, super fast.. trains constantly arriving.. chicago should get on the same track HA get it.. pun.

had a coffee back at the hotel before leaving for dinner.
we ate at the 'Commanderie des Antonins', used to be a hospital.. in the 13th century. all stone inside, old equipment, candle lit dinner. i had a really good quiche lorraine to start with a salad. and i tried some l'agneau (lamb) which they, on the menu decided to add 'né et élevé en France'.. born and raised in france, the left out the killed part :( poor lamb (baa baa wouldnt be happy to know haha). it was pretty fatty, i wasnt really a fan :( first meal i havent liked.. after a week. i'd say thats ok. finished with a great tarte du chocolat. which apparently.. you can say incorrectly? because the waitress didnt understand me the first time so i repeated.. tarTE.. du.. cho-co-lat...... and she got it. she should learn french.. even though she understood when i ordered all my other items.. or she should at least know that there are only two desserts on the menu and chocolat doesnt sound at all like citron.

wanted to go to the bathroom cus i figured it would be super cool.. uhh kinda of. the word that would better describe is terrifying. they were in the basement, only one light and at the far end of this long stone hallway. in the mens room were some weird things hanging down from the ceiling? and i was scared i got locked in. very old, and cool... just could use a little less creepiness.

just got back to the hotel and im hating french. i can speak quicker but mess up n forget vocab and cant hear people and.. oh i started a list of basic words that dont exist in french including 'stale' (only have a word for stale bread other wise its just dry) and 'cheap' (can only say 'not' expensive), and location (certain form of it) and sweet.. like flavor (can only say sugary).. im annoyed. not everything thats stale is dry and not everything thats sweet tastes sugary.

i do love lyon though super quaint. and i do love france, just not the language right now
